Pregnancy period is a very delicate period in the life of every lady/woman. During this period, the expectation of the woman, the husband and the relatives, is the arrival of their bouncing baby boy or girl by the end of the ninth month. Although some pregnancies may not reach nine months, while some others may be delayed to cross nine months. But, in both cases, the expectation remains the same. Unfortunatedly, there are certain factors that does not allow this expectation to come through. In today's content, I shall be focusing on the dietry aspect of these factors. Hence, if you have anyone that is pregnant; your wife, daughter, sister, mother, daughter-in-law, aunty, niece, friend, girl-friend relative or even your enemy, please warn her to abstain from any of the following food items, if she must journey through this period of pregnancy and arrived safely. Below are the list of such food items;
1. RAW OR UNCOOKED MEAT, POULTRY, AND SEAFOOD: These foods contain bacteria like; Salmonella and Listeria. These bacteria are not good to human health, especially for pregnant women because they can cause food poisoning. Such foods can also result in certain infections that can lead to miscarriage, premature labor and defect of birth. Therefore, every pregnant woman must avoid such raw foods like; sushi, sashimi, ceviche and oysters, scallops and clams, pork, beef and poultry.
2. RAW EGGS: Raw eggs are not also good for the health of a pregnant woman and her baby, because of the presence of Salmonella bacteria, a bacteria that causes food poisoning.
3. UNPASTEURIZED DAIRY PRODUCTS: These are another set of foods that are not good to be taken by pregnant women. Such foods like; milk and soft cheeses, contain certain bacteria like; Listeria and E coli, which can affect the life of the mother and the baby. Hence, such unpasteurized dairy products like; big bang, grayson, winnimere, morbier, raclette, tete de moine, gabietou, goat's milk, sheep's milk, and any other form of unpasteurized dairy products, are not good for pregnant women.
4. HIGH-MERCURY FISH: Fishes like shark, swordfish, and king mackerel, bigeye tuna, marlin, are highly rich in mercury, and can harm the development of the fetus's brain and nervous system. Hence, must be avoided by every pregnant woman.
5. RAW AND UNCOOKED SPROUTS: These set of foods have the presence of certain bacteria like; Salmonella and E coli in them, and can lead to food poisoning, which is not good for the health of the mother and her baby. Therefore pregnant women should avoid such sprouts made from; bean seeds and grains, alfalfa, radish, sunflower, snow pea, mung, broccoli, lentils, chickpeas, onion, soya bean, and peas.
6. EXCESSIVE CAFFEINE: Pregnant women should avoid high intake of caffeine, as this can increase the risk of miscarriage and cause low birth weight. Hence, such drinks like; instant coffee, espresso, cafe` conleche, tea, hot chocolate, caffe` macchiato, tiramisu, energy drinks, and any other drinks that contain enough caffeine in them, must be avoided by pregnant women, for a safe delivery.
7. ALCOHOL: Intake of alcohol by a pregnant woman, can increase the risk of fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASDs), a serious life-long condition for the babies. It can also lead to other similar health issues, that does not go well with a pregnant woman and her baby.
8. FISHES WITH HIGH LEVELS OF POLLUTANTS: Pregnant women should do away with fishes like bluefish and tilefish, which can contain high pollutant level. Such pollutants like; PCBs and dioxins, are not good for the health of the pregnant woma and her baby. Such fishes can also affect the child's cognitive and neurological development in the long run.
Haven't gotten the whole knowledge of this, it becomes paramount for every pregnant woman to be on the safer side, by embracing and focusing on such foods like;
* Cooked and pasteurized foods; These foods can be good for pregnant women, because they have lower risk of foodborne illnesses.
* Fresh foods and vegetables; These foods are made up of essential nutrients that can improve healthy pregnancy.
* Lean proteins; Certain foods like; chicken, turkey, and certain fishes, that are rich in leans proteins, are good for fetus development in pregnant women.
* Whole grains; Whole grains like; quinoa, rice and whole-wheat bread can provide fiber and other essential nutrients, that are good for the health of pregnant women.
All things being equal, it therefore becomes paramount for every pregnant woman to consult with a personal professional healthcare provider and a registered dietitian for more dietry advices. By so doing, you will be able to ensure a safe delivery, and overcome the risk of every pregnancy challenges.
