The joints performs so many important functions in the body to ensure our overall healthy living. Among these important functions of the joints are;

The word arthritis is a general term for diseases of the joint, that are characterized by inflammation, stiffness and serious pains.

Hence, any disease that can affect the joint, which possesses the above characteristics (swelling, stiffness and pain) is regarded to as arthritis. It is a very dangerous disease as far as the joint is concerned. It has a way of paralyzing an individual, if something is not done urgently to control it. This disease can be caused by so many factors, and this will bring us to the next step;
WHAT ARE THE MAJOR CAUSES OF ARTHRITIS?
Many factors may be responsible for arthritis, but right here, I shall be showing you the major causes. Therefore the following are the major conditions that may give rise to arthritis;
1. Overuse of the joint: Subjecting the joints to too much stress can lead to the damage of the cartilage and the surrounding tissues, which can also result to wear and tear of the joints, hence causing arthritis.
2. Obesity: The possession of excess body weight can increase the strain and tension on the joints, leading to systemic swelling or inflammation of different parts of the joint. As a result of this, arthritis can result.
3. Injuries: Certain sports injuries like; fractures, dislocations, ligament tears, sprains, meniscus tears, and so on, can lead to the damage of the cartilage, hence causing arthritis.
4. Age: Research has shown that the older one becomes, the high the risk of having arthritis. This is due to the fact that the cartilage of the joints wears down and breaks naturally over the time. But this does not justify the fact that arthritis is synonymous with aged people.
5. Autoimmune disoder: Autoimmune disorder is a condition that results when the healthy body tissues like the joints are attacked by the body's immune system. Such condition can result to inflammation, pains and damage of the cartilage, bone and the structures of the joint. Thus leading to arthritis.
6. Genes: The variation in the HLA (human leukocyte antigen) genes can make the immune system to attack the body's own tissues, which can lead to pains and inflammation, thereby increasing the risk of arthritis like, the rheumatoid arthritis.

Weakness of the muscles: Weakness of the muscles can reduce their support for the joints, this can lead to poor alignment, increase in stress of the joint tissues and damage of the cartilage of the joints. As a result of this, the risk of injuries may increase, which also may lead to inflammation, hence causing arthritis.

There is no specific category of people that are meant to suffer arthritis. The disease can affect any age, sex and any category of person. But it is important to know that, older people has higher risk of developing the osteoarthritis than the younger people. Also, women between the ages of 30 years and 60 years, have higher risk of developing the rheumatoid arthritis. On a similar note, athletes, footballers, sportsmen and those whose jobs are physically demanding, has a great risk of developing arthritis, due to the too much stress that comes on their joints. Hence, arthritis is a disease of all and sundry. Therefore, you must be vigilant and follow some practical measures, so as not to be affected by this general disease. This brings us to the last section of today's content;
WHAT ARE THE PRACTICAL WAYS OF AVOIDING ARTHRITIS?
So far you can see that this disease is no respecter of persons, gender, age, profession, education, social class and so on. It is now the responsibility of anyone who don't want to be affected, to take cognizance of the following set of practical measures;
1. Monitor your diet: You should consider food nutrients that are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, like fishes, walnuts, eggs, soyabeans, yogurt, and others. These foods can reduce inflammation, hence preventing arthritis.
2. Manage your weight: You should maintain a healthy body weight by eating more of fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Limit the consumption of much saturated trans fat, added sugar, and sodium. Also your consumption of red meat should be limited. When you manage your body weight, you reduce the strains which too much body weight can put on the joints, hence avoiding arthritis.
3. Maintain regular exercise: Consider such activities and exercises like; walking, stretching, and strength training activities like; weight lifting. This is one of the best ways of preventing arthritis. These activities can be good in controlling your body weight, hence reducing the strain of the muscles on the joint, which may lead to arthritis.
4. Make sure you avoid injury and joint trauma: In maintaining regular exercise, it is also important to trend with caution so that you can avoid such injuries like; dislocations, sprains, fractures and so on, which are likely to increase the risk of arthritis.
5. Monitor and be attentive to your joints: To avoid arthritis, you have to monitor your joints and their condition at any given time, especially during exercises, sleeping, standing, sitting and so on. This can be done done by practicing good posture.
6. Move out of or quit smoking: It is practically true, that smoking is one of the root causes of arthritis, hence you must move out of it or quit it entirely if you must avoid arthritis. Smoking causes inflammation of the body, damages immune system, increases the risk of autoimmune conditions like, RA. It also impairs blood circulation and oxygen delivery, which hinders bone healing. This leads to the weakness of the bones and leading to serious joint pains. All these increases the high risk of arthritis. Hence, you must quit smoking, if you don't need arthritis.
7. Manage your blood sugar: To avoid athritis, you must also manage your blood sugar level. Research has shown that too much blood sugar level can trigger inflammation in the body, especially in people that has diabetes. And body inflammation is one of the potential causes of arthritis.
