The human eye is an important part of our body and our life. Any thing that makes your eye to be affected have eventually affected your life. For this purpose, you need to protect and guide your eye from damage by avoiding certain common life habits. This is the reason for today's blog, which is coming under the topic;
9 COMMON HABITS THAT CAN LEAD TO PERMANENT EYE DAMAGE:
There are a lot of common life habits which so many people involve themselves into ignorantly, without the knowledge of the health consequences of such life habits, especially on our eye. Hence, I shall be exploring these common life habits, which include;
1. Prolong screen time: It has become a common habit of so many people, especially the young people, to be staring at digital screens like; television, computer monitor, GSM and so on for a very long time. This can lead to digital eye strain, dry eyes and at the same time increases the risk of myopia (shortsightedness). To avoid this, you should try to follow 20-20-20 rule, whereby you have to look away from the digital screen after each 20 seconds.
2. Insufficient sleep: Lack of sufficient sleep is another common life habit that can lead to eye damage. This condition always result to eye fatigue, eye dryness, and can increase the risk of eye infections. Also having too much sleepless nights or denying yourself sleep, can lead to this ugly situation. To avoid this, you have to observe enough sleeping hours, like up to 7 to 9 hours per day.
3. Poor lighting: It is explicitly wrong health wise, to read or work under dim or hash lighting conditions. This can also lead to eye strain and fatigue, which eventually can cause permanent eye damage. Hence, the way out of this is to make sure that you read or work under bright lighting.
4. Not wearing sunglasses: When you fail to put on sunglasses with ultraviolet (UV) protections, this can increase the risk of macular degeneration, cataracts and eye cancer. These UV exposure, can also cause snow blindness. This can also lead to growths in the eyes, such as; pterygium and this can show up in our teens and 20s. Therefore to overcome this; you need to wear sunglasses that can protect your eye from the sun's ultraviolet rays.
5. Smoking: Smoking is another life habit that has the tendency of causing; cataract, macular degeneration, glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy, dry eye syndrome and can damage the optic nerve. Also exposure to secondhand smoking from burning of woods and other materials can lead to eye damage.
6. Poor diet: Giving yourself to diets that lack essential nutrients like; omega-3 fatty acids, zeaxanthin and lutein can increase the risk of age-related macular degeneration. Hence, try to include foods like; vegetables, citrus, eggs, nuts and other foods that are rich in these essential nutrients in your diet.
7. Not wearing protective eyewear: If you form the habit of doing certain activities that can increase the risk of eye problems without protective eyewear, it can also increase the risk of permanent eye damage.
8. Constant rubbing of your eyes: When you constantly rub your eyes, it can cause irritation and inflammation, which can increase the risk of eye infections. Rubbing your eyes can also give way for bacteria and germs around the eye, which increases the risk of eye infections as well. It has been shown that rubbing the eyes can lead to worsen progressive myopia in so many people.
9. Not getting regular eyes examination: When you fail to examine your eyes on a regular bases, this can lead to undiagnosed eye problems, delayed treatment, thus; increasing the risk of vision loss.
In conclusion, securing your eyes from damage, is your ultimate obligation. Your eyes is the major source of light into your body and life. It's proper functioning and healthy state determines your overall life achievements and success. Keep your eyes secured today, by embracing a healthy life habit that will not cause permanent damage to your eyes.
